This workshop will teach you how to use your camera to its full potential. Learn to understand the different modes and controls and and when/how/why to use each one.

We also cover general photography concepts that can be applied to photographing children of all ages—from newborns through teenagers and beyond. I’ll show you how to discover the best places in your home to take photos and the differences between snapshots and portraits and practical and creative ways to make both.

This class, like my photography, places a special emphasis on capturing and creatively photographing your daily life.

I realize a professional photography session is an indulgence—a once a year event that gives you the chance to get in the photos with your family and mark a specific time in your lives. But I’m also a firm believer that there are a million everyday moments, all year round, that deserve to be captured and documented creatively and beautifully and that YOU are the person best qualified to do that because you are there.

This workshop covers general photography concepts that can be applied to photographing children of all ages—from newborns through teenagers and beyond. I will teach you how to use your camera to its full potential and understand it's different modes. I’ll show you how to discover the best places in your home to take photos and the differences between snapshots  and portraits and practical and creative ways to make both. This class, like my photography, places a special emphasis on capturing and creatively photographing your daily life.

So who is this workshop for?

Anyone who would like to learn the ins and outs of how to use their camera to its fullest potential. If you have a camera that's been sitting on auto and want to take the next step to understanding all the buttons and dials, I've got you covered.

Who this workshop is not for?

If you already understand all the bells and whistles of your camera and can consistently take properly exposed and creative photos you are probably too advanced for this class.

If you are thinking about starting your own photography business or are already charging clients for photography services, this class is not for you. I will not be discussing the business of photography.

Do I need a fancy camera to attend?

Not fancy, no. But yes, you should have a DSLR or any interchangeable lens camera to get the most out of this class. If you're in the market for a camera, I'm happy to consult with you prior to class about which one might be best for you to purchase. The class does cover concepts that can be applied to photographing with point and shoot and phone cameras, but we spend a lot of time on stuff that won't apply to you if you only have one of those. Questions? Reach out any time.

Where will it be held?

Workshops will be held at private residences in and around Westchester County New York, Fairfield County, Connecticut and New York City. If you are interested in having me conduct an in person workshop for your group please get in touch to discuss details.

Why take this class from me?

I am a nationally-recognized professional child and family photographer with teaching and publication credits in major print and online photography magazines, as well as a long list of private and corporate clients. I trained as a fine-art film photographer and when my first son, Jake (now 17) was small, I turned my focus to portraits and fell in love with photographing children. I have years worth of practical experience that I want to share with you.

I believe that there is beauty to be found amongst the chaos of daily life with children and that with some basic understanding of photographic principals and techniques, you can document your children's childhood in a way you'll be delighted to display and save forever.

The three-hour class is $225 and includes snacks and beverages a signed copy of my book, printed cheat sheets to keep with you to help you remember what you've learned and a few extra goodies!
